What is D.A.R.E.?

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is the largest, most effective school based drug and violence prevention program in America. D.A.R.E. provides practical tools to help kids remain drug-free. Through programs designed by educators and implemented by trained officers, D.A.R.E. meets the challenge of keeping our youngsters informed of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, giving children in all age groups the choice to stay drug and alcohol free.

Since 1983, when D.A.R.E. was initiated, over 100 million children have participated in and shared the benefits of D.A.R.E. programs. Today, there are more than 50,000 D.A.R.E. officers serving 26 million children nationwide in 80% of our school districts, as well as another 10 million children in 54 other countries around the world. In a recent study of California school children, 95% of the children interviewed reported that their local D.A.R.E. officer had a significant impact on their decision not to use drugs. Furthermore, the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse revealed a 13% reduction in the use of illegal drugs among young people.
